GUWAHATI: Bhupen Kumar Borah, the president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), wrote to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday regarding the creation of a branch of the Koliabor-Itanagar four-lane highway to connect Gohpur to Jonai.

Bhupen Kumar Borah said that this highway could have a higher demand as it reduces the distance between Guwahati and Dibrugarh. He added that the two districts of Lakhimpur and Dhemaji have been given a pass by this four-lane project.

The distance between Dibrugarh and Guwahati using the northern bank of the Brahmaputra which goes via the Bogibeel Bridge and Dhemaji is shorter than the distance covered on the southern bank which is via Jorhat. Also, the one via the southern bank of the Brahmaputra passes through the Kaziranga National Park and does not have the option of being converted to a four-lane highway.

This project will not only connect the Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts of the State but also ease the traffic load on the Kaziranga National Park, said Borah. He requested the Chief Minister to take up the matter with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
