Assam Pradesh Congress Committee opposes outsourcing of GMC tax collection

GUWAHATI: A delegation of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) on Monday met the Commissioner of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), MN Dahal and its Mayor, Mrigen Sarania and submitted a memorandum stating that outsourcing of tax collection for the civic body to any private firm will not be accepted by the Opposition party.

The APCC informed via a statement that the GMC Commissioner admitted before the delegation that it was mistake on civic body's part to float a tender in this regard without first consulting the councillors and residents of the city. According to the APCC statement, the Commissioner also clarified that relevant tender was issued in August by the GMC and not the State Government.

The statement added that the delegation told the Commissioner that the GMC Act provides for involvement of citizens in the property tax assessment process through setting up of ward committees.

The APCC statement said that the delegation urged the GMC Commissioner and Mayor to enhance the efficiency of the tax branch of the civic body and take care of tax assessment and collection on its own.

The delegation comprised chairman of the APCC's media wing, Manjit Mahanta, State Mahila Congress president Meera Borthakur Goswami, spokespersons Ramen Borthakur and Kushal Kumar Sarma and president of the Guwahati city district unit, Swapan Kumar Das.
