GUWAHATI: The Assam State Primary Teachers' Association (ASPTA) suspended till May 15, 2023, its decision to lock out primary schools during the 2023 Gunotsav. With this gesture, the ASPTA showed its confidence in the State government led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The ASPTA took this decision at its executive meeting today.

The ASPTA has informed the Secretary of Elementary Education, Assam the decision to put on hold the proposed Gunotsav boycott.

ASPTA has been agitating for the creation of the posts of headmaster in primary schools, refunding deducted grade pay of Rs 8,700 of graduate teachers, raising the earned leave up to 30 days per year, regularization of the jobs of contractual teachers by clearing their arrears dues, etc. The Association had set a deadline of December 31, 2022, for the fulfilment of its demands in a previous executive meeting. They also wrote a letter to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on their demands. They had also announced a series of agitation. However, Education Minister Ranoj Pego called them for a meeting on December 21, 2022, when he assured the Association of meeting its demands on a priority basis. He also urged the Association to cancel its agitation programme.
