Assam Public Works files FIR against Prateek Hajela over NRC 'Anomalies'

GUWAHATI: The Assam Public Works (APW) has lodged an FIR (First Information Report) against former NRC (National Register of Citizens) State Coordinator Prateek Hajela and his close associates for allegedly manipulating the family tree verification process while updating the NRC.

The APW has alleged that Hajela and his associates used the government mechanism to insert the names of the illegal and doubtful persons' name in the updated NRC with the help of some officers having a migrant background, data entry operators, minority leaders and also some anti-national elements.

"The verification of family tree would have been the fool-proof method of NRC verification, had it been done properly. In the family tree verification, all the offspring of a 'legacy person' were asked to submit their family details which were compared through software. The family trees of the genuine offspring match and the family tree of the persons who assume a name in the pre-1971 documents as their ancestors do not match with that of the genuine offspring," stated APW president Aabhijeet Sharma in the FIR addressed to the Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Assam Police.

The APW underlined that a very high percentage of illegal and doubtful persons' names have been included in NRC.

"In the interlocutory application (IA) filed by the present NRC State Coordinator, it was reported that there have been 40 per cent wrong uploading of results of family tree matching which cannot be treated as a normal human error but it was well-planned, well-coordinated effort to include undeserving persons' name into NRC. This is an act of treason towards the nation," said Sharma.

"It is felt that if the call records of the officers and data entry operators working in the immigrant dominated areas are analyzed, the nexus between Prateek Hajela, some officers with an immigrant background, data entry operators and some minority leaders will come into light enabling the law enforcing agencies to take action against such anti-national activities," he added. The APW requested the ADGP to register a case against the accused persons under proper provisions of law and conduct enquiries to book them for their anti-national activities.
