GUWAHATI: Due to the coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent lockdown, people have been forced to stay indoors. This has resulted in an increase in the rate of cybercrimes in Assam. According to the latest report of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), the rate of cybercrime recorded in Assam in 2020 was 10.1 percent, which is higher than the national cybercrime rate of 3.7 per cent.
The total rate of cybercrime is calculated as crime incidence per one lakh of population. Karnataka recorded the highest cybercrime rate in the country– 16.2 per cent– followed by Telangana with 13.4 per cent and Assam in the third position with 10. 1 per cent.
Compared to Assam, the cybercrime rates of the other north-eastern States are quite low. Arunachal Pradesh recorded a cybercrime rate of 2 per cent, Manipur 2.5 per cent, Meghalaya 4.4 per cent, Mizoram 1.1 per cent, Nagaland only 0.4 per cent and Tripura 0.8 per cent.
Cybercrimes usually include crimes where computers are used for committing fraud, pornography or violating privacy. Interestingly, according to the NCRB data for the year 2019, the cybercrime rate of Assam was third in the country –6.5 per cent– while the national cybercrime rate that year was 3.3 per cent.
