Assam State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (ASCPCR) organizes webinar on child labour

GUWAHATI: May 1 is celebrated as International Labour Day to celebrate the achievements of the workers and to spread awareness about the exploitation that workers face in their work places across the globe. Child labour prevails as a major issue in the society which needs to be addressed for the better protection and promotion of the rights of children. Apart from that, engagement of pregnant women and lactating mothers in labour forces is also a globally pervasive phenomenon. To protect these vulnerable sections of labourers and to ensure application of all the legislative protections enshrined in the Constitution of India and other legislations is the need of the hour.

In view of the above, a webinar on the topic 'Protect Children from child labour, now more than ever' was organized here by the Assam State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (ASCPCR). According to a press release, the main objective of the webinar was to create awareness among the stakeholders regarding menace of child labour and the way forward to tackle with it.

Delivering the welcome address Dr Sunita Changkakati, Chairperson of ASCPCR, highlighted the situation of child labour, particularly in Assam. In his inaugural speech, Ajoy Kumar Dutta, member of ASCPCR, elaborated on the impact of child labour on the child. He emphasized protection of children from child labour with a strong hand. The invited resource person of the webinar, Himangshu Ranjan Nath, Assistant Professor of the National Law University and Judicial Academy, in his deliberation spoke about the legal provisions related to child labour.

Almost 50 participants from all the districts including the Labour Officer, District Elementary Education Officer and teachers participated in the webinar, which was moderated by Phanindra Bujar Baruah, member of ASCPCR. Other members of the Commission, Dr Pilu Hazarika and Rupa Hazarika, were also present at the webinar.
