GUWAHATI: The Assam State Zoo-cum Botanical Garden on Friday reopened for the first time for visitors after the nationwide lockdown was imposed in March, 2020. The new addition to the Zoo includes Aldabra Tortoise and Red Kangaroo which were allowed for public viewing.

The Zoo authorities stated that they sold around 3,000 tickets despite having a target to sell only 1,000 tickets through online mode.

"We are planning to bring zebras from Israel, chimpanzees from Mysore and White Winged Wood Duck from Czech Republic. We are also planning to renovate the water reservoir and construction work is underway for separate animal kingdom for the exotic species," said Range Officer Robin Baishya. He also underlined that the Capuchin monkeys and Hyacinth macaos which were rescued from Dholai under Cachar district are in the breeding center.

The Range Officer added that the botanical garden of the Zoo has been closed for security purpose. He also highlighted that the walk-through aviary of the zoo which contains birds and different species of plants is one of the biggest in the country.
