Assam State Zoo Welcomes 2 Himalayan Black Bear Cubs

GUWAHATI: Two Himalayan Black Bears were welcomed into the world at the Assam State Zoo Cum Botanical Garden. The species is listed as vulnerable due to the encroachment of human population, forest fires and the timber industries which have reduced the bear’s habitat. As the cubs of these species have a high mortality rate, it was a relief to have procured the two cubs alive. According to officials, special care was taken of the mother to ensure the safe birth and health of the offspring. The mother and her cubs have secluded themselves inside their den and will stay put till the next fifteen days.
