GUWAHATI: At a time when the rest of India has been feeling the recession in automobile industry, the registration of vehicles in Assam seems to be normal – registering around 45,000 vehicles per month till August 31, 2019. In Kamrup (M) district alone, around 9,000 new vehicles were registered per month from April to August this year.
The number of vehicle registration in the State has doubled in the past two financial years – 2017-18 and 2018-19. According to sources in the office of the Commissioner of Transport, Assam, a total of 2,67,900 motor vehicles were registered in the State in fiscal 2014-15. The numbers of such registration were 2,90,874 in 2015-16 and 2,92,980 in 2016-17. However, the number of motor vehicles in the State almost doubled in 2017-18 with the registration of as many as 4,42,747 new ones. The trend was no different in 2018-19 as well when as many as 5,02,525 motor vehicles were registered in the State.
According to official inputs, the highest number of such registrations in 2018-19 was of two-wheelers numbering 2,60,295, followed by cars numbering 66,095. A district-wise analysis shows Kamrup (M) topping the list in 2018-19 with the registration of 97,440 vehicles, followed by Nagaon with 36,754 vehicles, Sonitpur with 32,458 vehicles etc. It shows that around 7,000-9,000 motor vehicles are being registered in Kamrup (M) district monthly as against around 45,000 vehicles in the entire State per month till August, 2019.
Talking to The Sentinel, an official attributed such a steep rise in the registration of motor vehicles in the State to easy bank loans and frequent car melas in the State. The situation, according to him, has enabled the middle class failies to procure cars. The official, however, felt that after the implementation of the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019, the scenario might change. He added that there has been no notification from the government for implementation of the Act.
