GUWAHATI: The two awards of the Government of Assam celebrating 'Gurujonas' Srimanta Sankardev and Srimanta Madhabdev must be conferred on specific days.

The appeal was made by the ASM (Asom Sattra Mahasabha) on Wednesday.

Talking to The Sentinel, the general secretary of this apex body of the xattras, Kusum Kumar Mahanta added, "As of now, there are no specific dates for conferring these prestigious awards.

"We urge the government to confer these awards either on the 'Abirbhav tithi' (birth anniversary) or the 'tirubhav tithi' (death anniversary) of both the gurujonas — Srimanta Sankardev and Srimanta Madhabdev."

"Moreover, the awards should be given to only such personalities who really deserve the honour."

Xattradhikar Kusum Kumat Mahanta of 'Kalshila Xattra' in Morigaon District, elucidated, "The government should also organize various programmes — including talks and seminars among others — on the 'Ek-Saran dharma' (neo-Vaishnavite culture) among the masses on such occasions. Such a move will help in broadcasting the messages of the gurujonas among a larger section of the public, including the youths.

Meanwhile, the 'tirubhav tithi' of Srimanta Sankardev was observed with religious fervour — observing the COVID-19 protocols — across the xattras and naamghars including the birthplace of the gurujona at the 'Bordowa Than' in Nagaon district on Wednesday.
