Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav: Quiz contest on official statistics held at Cotton University
GUWAHATI: In consonance with the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation's iconic week celebrations under Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, the Field Operations Division (FOD) of the National Statistical Office (NSO) under the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation organized Anvesha 2022, a nationwide quiz contest of college/university students and alumni on Monday at the Sudmerson Hall of Cotton University.
The quiz contest, which is principally on official statistics, is intended to promote awareness about official statistics and enlighten the young, minds on various facets of the official statistical system, stated a press release
The event was inaugurated by Paban Kumar Borthakur, Additional Chief Secretary, Assam. In his inaugural speech, he mentioned the importance of statistics for proper planning and implementation of Government projects. Barthakur also spoke about the accuracy and timeliness of any statistical analysis for interpolation and extrapolation of ideas.
In the inaugural session of the quiz contest, Prof Bhabesh Chandra Goswami, Vice Chancellor of Cotton University, delivered the keynote address on Data Science and its importance and implementation on statistical study.
The session started with the welcome address offered by Swapnalee Bhattacharya, Deputy Director General of National Statistical Office, Guwahati. In her address, she underlined the peculiar situation of low representation from Assam in both the Subordinate Statistical Service as well as in the Indian Statistical Service, and hoped that when such events get wide publicity either through the participants or media, it would help enlighten the young minds about the official statistical system, which will furthermore make them aware of the corresponding career avenues.
