GUWAHATI: Basistha Police seized 50 tonnes of rice from two trucks during a raid carried out on the National Highway at Basistha. The Police also arrested the driver of a truck while the other people in the two trucks had fled the scene before the search operation commenced. The arrested driver has been identified as Zakir Hussain.
Following a tipoff, the police team intercepted the vehicles (AS01NC2031 and NL02L3417) on Friday night. The two trucks are now under the jurisdiction of Basistha Police. Following interrogation by the Police, driver Zakir said that the rice consignments were loaded at Kanhibari in Barpeta District; and were to be deposited at Ladrymbai in Jaintia Hills District of Meghalaya. A case (1500/21u/s120(B)/379/406/420) has been registered.
