GUWAHATI: Bharalamukh Police had to resort to firing when an apprehended accused tried to flee and snatch the carbine of constable Ashit Boro, on Friday night.

The incident happened when the accused Kurapan Ali alias Kurban Ali (28 years of age), was leading the Police party of Bharalumukh Police Station to Matia under Azara Police Station to locate his associates. The accused had to be fired upon to recapture him and also recover the firearm. He was hurt in the leg, informed sources.

Both the injured — the accused and also the constable — were rushed to the Azara Rural Hospital for treatment. The Azara Hospital referred the accused to GMCH (Guwahati Medical College & Hospital). Subsequently, he was shifted to GMCH in a 108 Ambulance.

Personnel of the SOG (Special Operation Group) of West Guwahati Police District along with Bharalumukh Police apprehended Kurapan Ali from the Machkhowa area in the city on August 6, 2021. The joint police team also recovered suspected contraband heroin and other items including cash, and gold from his possession. Kurapan Ali is son of late Khalil Rahman of No. 3 Dholpur under Sipajhar Police Station in Darrang District.

Further leads from Kurapan Ali led to a raid at the Kotabari area of Gorchuk, by the Police. The operation led to the following recoveries: 10 vials comprising 2.16 gms and one soap case of 12.72 gram of suspected heroin. The total weight of the seized heroin is 14.88 gram. The other seizures include seven syringes, three empty soap cases and 260 empty vials. The Police also recovered cash amounting to Rs 1,74,000; one R1 motor cycle (AS01 EE 8436); gold jewellery weighing 87.72 gram; and silver coins weighing 210.38 gram.

The Police also recovered an SBI passbook in the name of Chaleha Khatoon wife of Kurban Ali; and three mobile handsets. Further investigation is on.
