GUWAHATI: The sleuths of BIEO arrested Azizur Rahman (44), a fair price shop owner, in connection with not distributing the allotted PDS commodities and retaining the ration cards of several beneficiaries of the Kachumara village in the Barpeta district.
According to sources, Dilip Deka, Superintendent of BIEO, conducted an inquiry based on the allegations by several beneficiaries under Dakshin Bogoribari Gaon Panchayat Samabai Samiti Limited of village Kachumara, Barpeta, that a fair shop owner, Azizur Rahman (44), has not distributed the allotted PDS commodities and also retained the ration cards in the names of several beneficiaries of the village. An FIR was lodged on January 30, which led to the registration of a case (08/2023 U/S 406/420 IPC, R/W Section 7 of the Essential Commodities Act) in the BIEO.
The BIEO source said that, during the investigation, 23 ration cards in the names of as many families were recovered and seized from the possession of Azizur Rahman, which was unauthorizedly kept by him. The investigation also established the fact that, by retaining those ration cards, he syphoned off the entire PDS commodities allotted in the name of those beneficiaries and diverted the commodities to the black market for his own gain, thereby depriving the poor beneficiaries of their legitimate dues issued by the government under various schemes.
Azizur Rahman was arrested on Saturday and sent to judicial custody.
