GUWAHATI: The Special Squad of the East Guwahati Police District (EGPD) from the Basistha and Hatigaon Police Stations has busted a gang of motorcycle lifters with a series of raids in various parts of Assam and Meghalaya. According to police sources, the special drive resulted in the arrest of 20 thieves along with recovery of 12 stolen bikes and cash amounting Rs1,37,000. The gang was active in stealing bikes from the various areas of the city.
The police unearthed the modus operandi of the gang from revelations made by some arrested thieves and traced the stolen bikes to neighbouring States.
According to the sources, the Police started this drive following the report of a stolen bike from the Basistha area on January 22 this year. A Special Squad was organized to investigate the spurt in cases of thefts from this area. On February 16, five persons were arrested in connection with case number 111/22 U/S 379 of IPC: Tiku Boro (18) of Beharbari, Guwahati; Arjun Guwala (25) of Bokajan, Karbi Anglong; Kaushik Mazumdar (18) of Belsor, Nalbari; Dhanjit Boro (24) of Birubari, Guwahati; and Bishnu Boro (20) of Beharbari, Guwahati.
Based on input received during interrogation of the five arrested thieves, the squad conducted raids at various places in Baksa, resulting in the arrest of Bithab Boro alias Dadura of Suwankata in Baksa. Seven stolen bikes were recovered.
Further interrogation and investigation led to more arrests and recovery of five bikes from various parts of the State, as well as from Meghalaya. One Himalayan motorcycle was recovered from Borbori in Baksa. In the raid in Meghalaya, the police retrieved two Pulsar bikes. According to the sources, those arrested subsequently include Nirmal Kalita alias Nalberia of Barama in Baksa, Mohidul Islam of Allopatty Char in Barpeta, Billal Hussain of Allopatty Char in Barpeta, Romius Rongrin of West Khasi Hills, Meghalaya, Pailoshn N Marak of West Khasi Hills, Meghalaya; Siltin R Marak of West Khasi Hills, Meghalaya,. Jacinth Borah of Boko, Indrajit Das alias Rahul of Boko, Mridul Ramchiary of Salbari in Baksa and Dipen Medhi alias Dhan of Barbara in Baksa.
The Special Squad continued their probe as the kingpin of this whole network of bike lifters and receivers was still at large. Credible information was secured and a raid was conducted which resulted in the arrest of Vinod Basumatary of Lalmati, Guwahati. A stolen bike and Rs 87,000 in cash was recovered from his possession. Further follow up led to recovery of Rs 60,000 in cash and the arrest of four more members of the gang, identified as Vinod Basumatary of Lalmati, Jovianstar Lyngdoh Marshillong of West Khasi Hills, Ashwally Sunney Lyngdoh of West Khasi Hills and Solomon Wanniang of West Khasi Hills.
