GUWAHATI: Leader of Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly Debabrata Saikia on Friday alleged that the BJP led Government has betrayed the public by not solving the crucial issues of the State.

"The failure of the government was reflected in the Assam Assembly Sessions. It has failed to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic and thus we had brought an adjournment motion in the Session. However, the Speakers didn't accept our appeal," he asserted.

Despite being controlled, the COVID situation is getting worse every passing day, Saikia opined.

He alleged that the Health Minister is not following the ICMR guidelines and is taking decisions at his own will.

"Due to the wrong policies of the government, the people didn't receive the benefits and State's economy has suffered. The treatment process of COVID patients is facing a hurdle due to shortages of beds, kits for Rapid tests, ambulances etc," Saikia underlined.

"We raised questions to the government in the House regarding the status of the report of the High-Level Committee of Clause 6. However, we didn't receive any response," he stated.

Saikia pointed out that the High-Level Committee had submitted the report on February 25.

"It has been six months since the submission of the report. Has the government submitted the report to the Centre?" questioned Saikia.

Further, the leader welcomed the government's decision to create three new autonomous councils for the – Koch Rajbongshi, Moran, and Matak communities.

However, he slammed the government for neglecting the similar demands of other communities - Chutia, Tea Tribes and Tai Ahom.

The demand of the six aforementioned communities for the grant of ST status was not given, he stated.

The leader also highlighted the plight of the tea workers.

"A committee was formed by the government in 2017 to increase the wage of the tea workers. The government has not yet informed in the House whether the committee has submitted the report or not," said Saikia.

Further, stressing on the economic crisis in the State, he added, "In May, the SITA had submitted a report with recommendations to the government to revive the State's economy after the COVID pandemic. As the country's GDP is low, thus the SITA's recommendations should be implemented."
