BJP hails approval of Brahmaputra under-water tunnel

GUWAHATI: The State BJP has welcomed the Centre's approval to the construction of a tunnel under the Brahmaputra river.

In a statement issued to the media, State BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass said, "Apart from development of infrastructure in the State, such a tunnel will play an important role in the defence of the country. The Centre has taken the threat from China to the Northeast seriously. Such defence-related projects will develop the region immensely along with the defence of the country. In the 65-year-long rule of the nation by a particular political party, no such works were undertaken. Even the preliminary works that are a must from the defence point of view have also not been done. However, the present BJP government has laid much importance on such issues. The construction of the 14.85-km long tunnel will help movement of arms to the border."
