GUWAHATI: State BJP leader Muminul Aowal has said that if 1951 is taken as the cut-off year for identifying 'Assamese people', a large number of immigrants from erstwhile East Bengal will get constitutional safeguards, and as such he is against 1951 as the base year for such identification.

Talking to the media on Thursday, Aowal said, "Constitutional safeguard is meant for only the ethnic groups of the State who have been affected because of the immigrants, and there shouldn't be any date or year as cut-off year. The report of the High-Power Committee as made public by the ASSU will indirectly help immigrants by providing them constitutional safeguards. I oppose this."
