BJP resorted to irregularities during election, alleges AJP

'EVMs were transported to strong rooms in e-rickshaws and cabs'

GUWAHATI: The AJP (Assam Jatiya Parishad) has alleged the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) of resorting to irregularities during the third phase of the polls in Guwahati East constituency.

Addressing the media here on Wednesday, Guwahati East AJP candidate Adip Kumar Phukan's election agent Amitabh Borthakur highlighted several incidents of misconduct during the polls.

Borthakur alleged that in various polling stations of the Guwahati East constituency, leaflets of the BJP candidate were distributed.

"The police caught BJP workers distributing leaflets in polling booths at Kamrup Academy and Uzanbazar Jahaj Ghat. Meanwhile, in B. Borooah College polling booth, the EVMs' glitches panicked the voters as the VVPAT machines were not showing the party symbol after the votes were casted. We also notified the Election Observer about the incident," said Borthakur.

Further, he underlined that a Tata Sumo vehicle (AS 01 LC 4065) carrying three EVMs was parked outside Ulubari Higher Secondary School Polling Booth.

"While we were inquiring about the said vehicle, it drove off. We would like to question the Election Commission of India as to why three EVMs were kept in the car?" said Borthakur.

He alleged that EVMs were being transported to strong rooms from Assam Engineering Institute polling booth, Chandmari without proper safety measures.

"Despite protest from AJP workers, the EVMs were transported without proper security from the polling booth. In Kahilipara Udayachal polling booth, a BJP candidate misused his power by closing the polling booth at 4:45 pm. After intervention of the concerned authorities, the voting process was resumed," said Borthakur.

The AJP has argued that the strong rooms are not built according to EC guidelines. It said that in many areas EVMs were found to be carried out in e-rickshaw, Ola, and Uber vehicles.

"We doubt how the EVMs will be kept safely till May 2," Borthakur added.
