GUWAHATI: The Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) Assam Pradesh organized a youth parliament programme at Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra in Guwahati on Thursday. Over 2,000 delegates of BJYM from across the State were present at the programme and special guests included Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Bharatiya Janata Party State president Ranjeet Kumar Dass and North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) convener Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Addressing the delegates, CM Sonowal stressed various initiatives taken by the BJP during its tenure in Assam. Talking about the stir regarding the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), he stated that there has been a false narrative spreading among the people regarding the Act. He said, the BJP promised to bring CAA and the party had already discussed it with various State organizations. He slammed the Congress government and stated it didn’t take any step to implement Clause 6 of the Assam Accord and added that the BJP will surely implement the Clause. It is to be mentioned that Clause 6 of the Assam Accord is for providing safeguards to protect the cultural, social, linguistic identities and heritage of the Assamese people.

BJP state president Ranjeet Kumar Dass said people have misunderstood the CAA and he urged the delegates to make them aware of the Act. NEDA convener Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the people who will get citizenship under the CAA are already residents of the country. “Only the people who are already living in Assam will get citizenship under the Act,” he added.
