GUWAHATI: The All Assam Chutia Students' Union (AACSU) has sought Dispur to lay emphasis on rural economy to tide over the economic slowdown brought about in the State by COVID-19.
In a memorandum sent to the Chief Minister of Monday, the students' body said, "The outbreak of COVID-19 has brought lockdown and economic slowdown in the State, leading us towards a bleak future. The poor, middle class and all others have been facing cash crunch. The situation has been aggravated further with the return of thousands of youths of the State working elsewhere in the country to the State losing their jobs. Joblessness is already a serious problem in the State, and the return of thousands of youths has added to the number of jobless people in the state.
"In such a situation only uplifting the rural economy can give people a succour. The modus operandi should be such that all should be ensured subsidies and bank loans without having to mortgaging any property," AACSU president Khirod Saikia.
The Union has sent 13 demands to the government, including extension of loans with subsidies for piggery, poultry, goatery, cattle rearing etc.
