GUWAHATI: Bordoisila – a thundersquall – has done what it is infamous for among the mankind. In its destructive best, the thundersquall lashed Guwahati and its outskirts in the wee hours on Wednesday, flattening a number of Bihu pandals and uprooting trees, besides breaking their branches.
Affected the worst in the destructive thundersquall are Bihu pandals, leading a few Bihu sanmilanis to cancel the day’s programmes. The Pandu Rongali Bihu Sanmilani, Maligaon pandal erected at the Railway Stadium was affected the worst. The Bihu pandal was flattened when programmes were underway, leading to injury to about 25 Bihu goers. The impact of the squall on the pandal is such that that Bihu sanmilani had to abandon all programmes of the day.
The pandal of the Guwahati Bihu Sanmilani, Latasil was also flatted by the squall. However, hectic repair of the pandal is underway on a war footing. The Bihu Samraggi contest slated for Wednesday night is to take place on schedule. The pandal of the Noonmati Bihu Sanmilani was also badly affected by the thundersquall. Since theirs is a permanent stage, all programmes are going on as scheduled. However, the viewers have to stand or sit under the open sky as the pandal has been flattened.
The pandal of the Pub Guwahati Bihu Sanmilani at Chandmarai has also been damaged. However, programmes are going on as scheduled after repair.
Many trees were either uprooted or broken at various areas in Guwahati, leading to power cuts for long hours. On the outskirts of Guwahati, Bikrampur, Niralpur, Moirapur, Purana Sukurberia and Patgaon in Rani; Dharapur, Azara, Garal, Mazirgaon, Khanamukh areas trees were broken and uprooted.
