Brahmaputra Board & IITG ink MoU to solve flood and erosion problems

GUWAHATI: The Brahmaputra Board and the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG) has signed an MoU to find a solution to the problems of floods and erosion.

IITG will join hands with NEHARI (North Eastern Hydraulic and Allied Research Institute), under Brahmaputra Board to utilize the Hydraulics laboratory, Soil laboratory, Rock laboratory and Concrete laboratory facilities of NEHARI.

It is to be noted that NEHARI was established under Brahmaputra Board at Rudreswar, North Guwahati as per Clause 7 of Assam Accord, and operationalized during 1996. The main functions of NEHARI are material testing, carrying out hydraulic model studies etc. Facilities such as Hydraulic Laboratory with model trays and flumes and laboratories for testing soil, concrete, other construction materials and foundation rock exist in the institute.

The MoU was signed by IITG Director Professor T.G. Sitharam and Brahmaputra Board Chairman Rajiv Yadav.

According to reports, a joint working group of IITG and Brahmaputra Board will carry out a study of soil erosion in the North East Region. Moreover, joint training programmes will also be organized at NEHARI to utilize the infrastructure available there.

Academic visits from IITG to NEHARI as per mutual convenience will be organized preferably from the current year 2021-22 for both Undergraduate and Postgraduate students of the Civil Engineering Department of IITG, the MoU read.

A collaborative project will be taken on conceptualization, development and subsequent implementation for better water and basin management in the NE region including improvement/ expansion of experimental facility at NEHARI.

As per the MoU, NEHARI will give access to the Hydraulics Laboratory, Soil laboratory, Rock laboratory and Concrete laboratory to IITG.

IITG will be responsible to gainfully utilize the Hydraulics laboratory of NEHARI for the physical modelling of the river. It will also constitute a joint working group with NEHARI for the study of soil erosion. The institute will extend technical cooperation in the form of know-how for infrastructural development, management and up-gradation of research laboratories facilities at NEHARI.

The MoU underlined that the Director of IITG, Professor T.G. Sitharam or his nominee and the NEHARI Director shall be primarily responsible for this cooperation at IITG and NEHARI, respectively.

The MoU shall have an initial duration of three years from the date of signing unless either party gives a six-month notice of termination. It may be extended further after review and by mutual written agreement.
