GUWAHATI: The BIEO (Bureau of Investigation of Economic Offences) seized 2,500 quintals of rice meant for the poor from the Boonmajha Samabai Samiti Ltd (BSSL) in the Darrang district today. The BIEO has brought the seized rice to Guwahati.

According to BIEO sources, the BIEO sleuths conducted a raid in the godowns of the cooperative society after receiving an allegation of hoarding rice under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana depriving the poor beneficiaries to sell it in the open market at higher prices. The BIEO sleuths found anomalies in the documents of the cooperative society and its agents. The investigators then seized the rice from the society's godown.

The market value of the seized rice is around Rs 1.75 crore. The BIEO sleuths, however, did not get the president and the secretary of the cooperative society. The seized rice, according to sources, is the allotment of June this year.
