GUWAHATI: The Forum Against Citizenship Act Amendment Bill (FACAAB) has appealed to everyone to stand together for opposing the Citizenship Amendment Bill so as to save Assamese identity.
Addressing a press meet at Guwahati Press Club on Monday, forum chairman Hiren Gohain said it is not that the Forum has a grudge on people belonging to other communities. He, however, dropped enough hint that the Forum does not want the existence of the Assamese to be at stake.
Gohain said that the Assamese people have a historic entity on their own which they do not want to lose at any cost. He fears that the implementation of the CAB will render the indigenous people of the State to minorities on their own land.
The Forum said that at a time when the people of Assam and the Northeast are fighting for safeguarding the sanctity of the Indian Constitution, the government is out to abolish Article 14 of the Constitution. It also said that the BJP government is unaware of the possible outcome in the event of the CAB getting its passage.
The Forum also demanded the government to stop the ‘conspiracy’ to hand over the Numaligarh Refinery Ltd (NRL) to the private sector.
The forum criticized the Central government for Kapili power project tragedy and urged it for a legal inquiry. It said that the people of Assam will never let the Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Power Project to come up.
