Guwahati: The carcass of a six-month-old leopard was recovered by the officials of the Forest department on Friday morning. The carcass was recovered from Maligaon area in Guwahati.

The Forest department officials were informed by the local residents after they spotted the carcass of the leopard in Mahadev Nagar in Maligaon area. A joint team of police officials along with the forest department officials recovered the six-month-old leopard's carcass and further sent it for post-mortem examination.

A Forest Department official said that there are marks of injury on the carcass. The official further said that it seems like the leopard either fell from the hill or was killed by another animal.

Earlier in November, a leopard created havoc in a girls' hostel in Guwahati. The incident happened in Milestone Girls Hostel in Hengerabari area of Guwahati, where a leopard was stuck under a sofa, in the ground floor of the hostel, where the owner resides. The owner of the hostel said that the leopard entered the hostel premises in the wee hours.

Catching a glimpse of a leopard in the city has become a common sight. It is mainly because the city is surrounded by hills and forests. In a photo-captured survey conducted by the Centre, it showed that 145 leopards have been sighted in the North East. This is due to the rapid loss of the natural habitats of leopards due to human encroachment and other activities.

The man-leopard conflict in Guwahati has taken an alarming proportion. The tea gardens in the State are also witnessing such conflicts and many leopards have been mercilessly killed by people.

The 'Status of Leopards Report' prepared by the Centre has said that the leopard population in Northeastern region of the country has been estimated due to sampling inadequacy (not sighted in cameras trapped in various natural habitats of the animal). The report further said that the country has 12,852 leopards as compared to the previous estimate of 7,910 conducted in 2014.
