Cardiac surgery during second COVID-19 wave

GUWAHATI: The decision to perform cardiac surgery, or postponing it, cardiac surgery should be made after weighing the risk of transmitting the infection to a sick patient with the risk of morbidity and mortality increased by delaying surgery.

The above observation was made by renowned cardiac surgeon Dr Bhabananda Das in view of the second wave of COVID-19 infection in different parts of the country as well as Assam.

Dr Das said it is necessary to weigh the risk of delaying cardiac surgery versus the necessity of doing it as a lifesaving procedure. "We are performing cardiac surgery in persons which considered as lifesaving and deferred others which will not impact the survival," he said.

Dr Das and his team have performed 100 cases as life -saving procedure with accepted mortality and morbidity at Health City Hospital in Guwahati. He said none of his team, surgeon, anesthetist, nurses, technician/ patient got infected with COVID-19 during this period.
