GUWAHATI: The Government of India has relaxed the digging time of Amrit Sarovars in Assam due to the prevailing flood situation in the State and the recent landslides in the Dima Hasao district.

With a view to conserve water for the future, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched the Amrit Sarovar scheme with an aim to develop and rejuvenate 75 water bodies in every district in the country as part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. Under this scheme, ponds with a maximum of one hectare of land each, will be dug. In Assam, the target is to dig 3,007 Amrit Sarovars.

Keeping in view the flood situation in the State, the Panchayat and Rural Development Department had taken up the issue with the Government of India. The Centre has now said that digging of ponds in Assam can start a little late. Nevertheless, digging of 48 Amrit Sarovars in Assam will begin by August 15 because the Amrit Sarovar scheme is a time-bound scheme. By August 15, 2023, work on all Amrit Sarovars must be completed.
