Chandrapur dumping ground row: Chandrapur locals undertake series of protest programmes

GUWAHATI: The Dumping Ground Birodhi Mancha (DGBM) has announced a series of protest programmes that they will undertake in the next 15 days to oppose Dispur's move to relocate the dumping ground from Boragaon to Chandrapur.

It is to be noted that the locals of Chandrapur have been opposing the government's decision since August 2019 after the Court issued an order to relocate the dumping ground from Boragaon. In this regard, the locals wrote to then Chief Minister, Chief Secretary, Kamrup Metro Deputy Commissioner, Guwahati Municipal Corporation Commissioner, and Assam Power Distribution Company Limited chairman. However, despite resentment from the locals, the GMC has been dumping garbage in the 40-acre area of the Thermal Power Complex, Chandrapur since June 28. Since then, the locals have been continuously protesting and demanding the government to roll back its decision.

Briefing the protest programmes that will be undertaken in the coming days, DGBM convener Shiva Rajbongshi said, "On August 4, a Satyagraha will be staged following which a rail blockade will be staged on August 8. A meeting titled 'Save Amchang, Save Khambrenga' will be held on August 10. The protesters will gherao the Chandrapur APDCL office on August 12 and on August 15, the Independence Day will be celebrated following which a bike rally will be taken out."
