Charitable School In Pamohi Switches To Solar Power

GUWAHATI: As a small step towards conserving nature, Akshar, a city-based charitable school in Pamohi has entirely switched over to the use of solar energy on a significant day when the entire world was observing Earth Hour on Saturday. Akshar Foundation is a registered public charitable trust engaged in poverty eradication through operation of a school that supplements formal education with vocational training, business incubation, and community development.

Prof (Dr) Alaka Sarma, founder of Akshar School said, “I am very happy to say that our entire school including the water pump is now running on clean and green solar energy. As the world is celebrating earth hour, it is very symbolic that we switched over to green energy on this day”. Earth Hour is a global movement that encourages people to conserve power. People were encouraged to switch off the lights for half an hour from 8.30 pm to 9.30 pm on Saturday, their local time. Famous monuments across the world also observed Earth Hour by switching off the lights. Keeping in mind environment and climate change, people are encouraged to switch off unnecessary lights and appliances like fridges, freezers, hot water cylinders, lights, and dryers to conserve energy. Earth Hour is also an opportunity to focus on long-term changes that everyone can make to do their part for the planet.

According to Parmita Nagen Sarma, Co-Founder and Associate Director of Akshar, “This is a humble contribution by Akshar with a pledge to protect the environment. The global Earth Hour campaign aims to raise awareness about the impact of climate change.” The event started in Australia in 2007 and is now observed by participants in over 180 of countries. Individuals, businesses and cities and territories worldwide joined Earth Hour 2019 to speak up for nature and inspire urgent action for the environment.
