GUWAHATI: City-based taxi drivers, who operate under ride-hailing platforms Ola and Uber, on Tuesday hit the streets in protest against the ongoing suspension of mobile internet service.

For 12,000-odd taxi drivers of Guwahati, managing bread and butter for their families has now become a challenge due to the suspension of internet services since December 11 evening. “Internet is the only source of income and lifeline for us. How we will manage bread and butter for our family?” president of All Assam CAB Operators’ Union Ismail Ali said.

Every app-operated taxi driver earns around Rs 1000-1500 per day after working for 18 hours. Majority of the drivers have to pay around Rs 10,000-20,000 as EMI per month for their vehicles. “We are now absolutely clueless on how to pay the EMI next month if the same situation continues,” Ali said.
