GUWAHATI: State BJP president Ranjit Kumar Das has claimed that the Clause 6 of the Assam Accord has been made it to the Parliament after three decades of its signing, and it has been possible because of the BJP.
In a statement issued to the media on August 12, Dass said, "What the BJP-led government at the Centre has done for the implementation of the Clause 6 of the Assam Accord wasn't done by any other governments in the past 30 years. Not only the Clause 6, the BJP is committed to implement the Assam Accord. Both the governments at the Centre and in the State have been taking positive steps for implementation of the Assam Accord. To revive the Clause 6 of the Assam Accord that was left by the previous government, the Centre formed the High-Power Committee with retired Justice Biplab Kumar Sarma and the committee submitted its report to the government. To implement the recommendations of the report, the committee gave a two-year time to the government. However, breaking its confidentiality, the report has been made public within five months.
"For constitutional safeguards to the people of Assam the need of the hour is constitutional amendment. Thus the issue needs more time."
