GUWAHATI: Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia on Sunday wrote to Governor Prof. Jagadish Mukhi demanding an inquiry by a sitting judge of the Gauhati High Court into the violence perpetrated by the anti-CAA protesters and security personnel.

“The inquiry must see whether excessive use of force was warranted against the protesters. Whether the Model Rules adopted by the Inspectors General of Police Conference, 1964 were adhered to while carrying out lathi-charges and firing upon protesters. In particular, whether a magistrate was present at all sites where firing took place; whether clear warning was given before firing commenced; whether aim was kept low (this is important because some victims were reportedly shot in the head or chest); whether any other method of crowd-control was tried before firing commenced,” Saikia mentioned in his letter.

Saikia in his letter also urged the Governor to advise the State Government to ensure unscrupulous elements do not take advantage of the present unrest in the State. He also demanded the immediate resumption of internet service in the State.
