CM Himanta Biswa Sarma undertakes cleanliness drive in Guwahati

 Rs 500-crore scheme to build houses for safai karmis

GUWAHATI: To make a substantial impact in promoting cleanliness and hygiene throughout Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma conducted a special 'Shramdaan for Swachhata' programme on Sunday. This initiative was part of the broader 'Ek Taarikh-Ek Ghanta' campaign aimed at fostering a cleaner and healthier environment.

As a part of the nationwide cleanliness drive, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma cleaned the portion of a road leading to Gandhi Mandap near Ulubari Chariali on Sunday. The Chief Minister was accompanied by Ashok Singhal, Minister of Housing, Urban Affairs, and Irrigation.

Responding to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal for 'shramdaan', for the 'Swachhata Hi Seva' campaign a day before Gandhi Jayanti, Chief Minister Sarma took to the streets and appealed to people to understand the importance of cleanliness and perceive the amount of hard work that labourers put in. The CM undertook the cleaning campaign for one hour. Working on the Prime Minister's appeal, the shramdaan campaign is taking place in various places. The CM announced that a scheme will be implemented for the GMC Safai Karmachari, where 2,000 houses will be built, and the whole budget for it will be Rs 500 crore. Also, he mentioned that soon a scheme will be implemented so that scholarships can be availed by the children of the workers. For the students who have completed their matriculation, a scholarship of Rs 10,000 yearly will be given; for the ones who want to go for higher studies, a scholarship of Rs 15,000 will be given; and for the ones who want to opt for professional courses, a scholarship of Rs 50,000 yearly will be provided.

As a highlight of the event, State Agriculture Minister Atul Bora, along with other dignitaries, played an important role in advocating for cleanliness. Minister Bora fervently appealed to the citizens of Assam to take active steps in maintaining the cleanliness of their surroundings. His impassioned call to action underscores the significance of collective responsibility in achieving a cleaner and more hygienic Assam.

The event witnessed the participation of several distinguished individuals, including Director of Agriculture Bhaskar Pegu, Director of Horticulture Triranga Bharatiya Borah, and Director of ASOCA Mousam Hazarika, all of whom demonstrated their commitment to the ‘Swachhata hi Sewa’ campaign.

Government officials from the Agriculture Department, alongside enthusiastic volunteers, joined hands in the spirit of community service to engage in cleaning activities across various locations in Assam. Their active involvement sends a resounding message that a cleaner Assam is achievable through collective effort.

The 'Shramdaan for Swachhata' programme serves as a powerful testament to the commitment of the Government of India, the Directorate of Agriculture, Assam, and its leaders towards the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. It is a call to action for every citizen to contribute towards a cleaner, greener, and healthier Assam.
