Commuters Might Face Cab Crunch as Driver's Union Decides Not to Work Under Ola, Uber

GUWAHATI: Soon citizens who choose to use Ola and Uber App for using basic daily commutes might not get any cabs as the All Guwahati Cab Driver's Union has decided that the cab drivers will not be working under Ola and Uber from August 1.

The decision was taken in view of the interest of cab drivers in the city as the cab drivers have not received needed incentives and the administration of Ola and Uber have not listed and fulfilled their demand.

According to sources Ola-Uber operators Ibrahim Ali and Debjit Deka tried to create an unpleasant situation among the drivers, that the cab drivers have revoked their decision of not working under Ola and Uber.

A press release was published to clarify that no government official or Ola-Uber authorities have consulted with the All Guwahati Cabin Drivers Union or any discussions have been held with the government or Ola-Uber authorities.

On Sunday the All Guwahati Cab Driver's Union holds a massive protest against giant car rent operator Ola and Uber at Chachal in Guwahati.

The protest was staged by the cab drivers against the administration of Ola and Uber for exploiting them over the years.

Earlier also a section of people created an unpleasant situation in front of the Uber office on Jayanagar Road here on Monday. The unruly youths did not allow any cabs to pick up passengers.

The root cause of the situation is the new RTA rule that does not allow cabbies having permission for plying in three States – Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh – to run as cab under Ola or Uber in Guwahati. Any violation of the rule will make the erring cabbies to cough up fines amounting to Rs 15,000.

A source in the District Transport department, Kamrup (M) said, "We've made it known to the cabbies as to how the problem of their permits can be resolved. However, the cabbies requested us not to charge fines for a few days till the problem is solved. A DTO can issue permits for two districts only. If the permit is in Kamrup (M), the cab can go to Kamrup district, and vice versa. However, have to get their permit countersigned by the DTO of the district."

All Guwahati Cab Drivers' Union (AGCDU) president Ibrahim Ali, on the other hand, said, "The issue is under discussion. We hope it will be resolved. However, a group is out to complicate the problem."
