GUWAHATI: Due to surge in prices of cement and TMT rods, the Congress and AIUDF (All India United Democratic Front) have slammed the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party)-led government.

While cement prices have been hiked by Rs 7-10 per bag, prices of TMT rods have gone up by Rs by 5,000-6,000 per tonne.

Both the parties have demanded the government to control the price hike at the earliest. APCC media department chairman Bhagirath Karan said at a time when hike in prices of all essential commodities has thoroughly ravaged the consumers across the State, now construction materials are burning big holes in the pockets of a section of them.

"The price of cement has increased by around Rs 7-10 per bag and TMT rods have surged to Rs 51,000 from Rs 45,000 per tonne. Due to the hike, common people will have difficulties in building their houses. To collect funds from industrialists and businessmen, the BJP party has increased the prices of these commodities," Karan said.

On the other hand, AIUDF general secretary HaiderHussain Bora showed concern that the prices of construction materials have surged ahead of the Assembly Election.

"The government has already failed to control the surging prices of the essential commodities. Now, the prices of construction materials like cement and rod have soared massively. However, the price hike has only been witnessed on local cement and non-branded TMT rods. The prices of branded cement and rods have not increased much," Bora underlined. The AIUDF also questioned the government whether there are any middlemen linked with the price hike.
