BJP spreading lies: Bhupen Borah

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhupen Borah on Thursday claimed that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is spreading "false and misleading news" regarding the incident of breach of security of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's convoy in Punjab on Wednesday and described it as a ploy to defame the Congress Government in the northern State.

Addressing a press conference at the Rajiv Bhawan here, Borah said that Modi was supposed to travel to Hussainiwala by helicopter from the helipad at Bathinda and the Chief Minister of Punjab was waiting at the helipad to receive the Prime Minister. However, Borah alleged that the Prime Minister started to proceed to Hussainiwala by road without proper intimation to the Punjab Government. The APCC president added that the route chosen by the Prime Minister was under blockade by protesting farmers for the last few days and consequently the Chief Minister of Punjab had sought 25-30 minutes' time to disperse these protesters. However, the Prime Minister did not wait and returned to the Bathinda airport.

Borah further claimed that the Prime Minister had actually returned without visiting Hussainiwala to save face because 95% of the seats at the event venue were empty.
