GUWAHATI: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhupen Kumar Bora on Tuesday released the party manifesto for forthcoming Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) election.

Bora claimed on the occasion that the GMC election is being only due to the intervention of the Gauhati High Court as the BJP Government had thrown democracy to the winds by not holding the election for the last three-and-a-half years. The APCC president said that residents of the GMC area are facing numerous problems, including severe scarcity of drinking water, bad roads, no streetlights, no transportation facilities in many areas of the city.

Alleging misrule by the BJP-led Government, he said that the humble kaji nemu (lemon) provides a case in point as the citizens of the city now have to pay Rs 15 for a single lemon.

Bora further claimed that whatever amenities the citizens have access to now are the ones which were put in place by the Congress when it was in charge of the GMC.

"Facilities for health, education, markets, transport, streetlights, a majority of the flyovers, roads and bye-lanes, were all developed during the Congress era. The BJP only claims credit for it, again an indication of the hollowness of 'Achhe Din'," he said.

Bora further said: "The current BJP government is destroying democracy, our self- respect, and our culture. Our resources are being sold off to big corporate houses. A certain Adani now owns Guwahati's Bharat Ratna Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport that was named after the man who kept Assam with India. By selling Guwahati's airport, the BJP has sold a part of Guwahati's soul.

The Congress manifesto promises, among other things, supply drinking water to every household within 100 days; initiation of a separate, major water supply project to cover Dispur, Kahilipara, Hatigaon, Khanapara, Panjabari, Hengerabari and other areas in south Guwahati; setting up of 100 vending zones for small businesses within 30 days; functional streetlights on all roads and bye-lanes within 30 days; and making Guwahati flood-free and pollution-free.
