GUWAHATI: The Congress has approached the Election Commission of India (ECI) to take action against State Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for allegedly threatening and blackmailing BPF (Bodoland People's Front) president Hagrama Mohilary.
Addressing a press conference at Rajiv Bhawan here on Tuesday, AICC (All Indian Congress Committee) spokesperson Gourav Vallabh said that Sarma threatened Mohilary by threatening to invoke NIA investigation on some alleged charges.
"Minister Sarma has made a mockery of the democratic process by resorting to blatant threatening. When the MCC (Model Code of Conduct) is in force, the administration including Police is under Election Commission of India to ensure fairness and impartiality.
"How did he receive information about alleged terrorist link as claimed? Where did this evidence surface from? If he already had this evidence, why did he not provide the evidence to investigative agencies? Criminal action must be initiated against him for not providing terrorists' related information to the State. It is a clear case of blackmailing and threatening their opponents to negate people's support to the Congress and its allies, which is akin to holding democracy at ransom," said Vallabh.
The AICC spokesperson further alleged that the BJP has not received any support for its 'divisive politics' and thus it is resorting to the politics of 'vendetta'. "The evidences he (Sarma) is talking about must be fabricated to surface at a time when BJP is losing the elections. What right does Minister Sarma have to bypass Constitutional set-up? APCC media department chairman Bobbeeta Sharma was also present in the press conference.
