GUWAHATI: The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has fined a cinema hall located in Guwahati after a moviegoer was bitten by something unknown inside the same. The legal body ordered the owners of the theatre to pay compensation for medical expenses, mental agony, and physical pain caused to the customer.
The Kamrup District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission ordered the authorities of the Galleria Cinema Hall to reimburse the medical bill amounting to Rs 2282.48. The Commission also ordered the payment of Rs 40000 as compensation for her mental agony and Rs 20000 for her pain and suffering. An additional compensation of Rs 5,000 was put as the cost of the proceedings. The total compensation to be paid to the victim by the authorities of the Galleria cinema is Rs 67282.48. She had filed a complaint regarding the incident, and the case was admitted by the court on March 20, 2019. Her claim included Rs 2282.48 as medical expenses, Rs 350,000 for mental agony, and Rs 250,000 for her pain and suffering as compensation, amounting to a total of Rs 602282.48.
The incident in question took place on October 20, 2018, when the victim, who is a doctor by profession, visited the Galleria cinema hall located in the Hub Mall in Bhangagarh with her family. The victim felt something bite her leg after the interval, which was found to be bleeding. She initially thought that she was bitten by a snake and had to be rushed to the nearest hospital as the authorities failed to provide any kind of first aid. He was kept under observation for some time before being released.
After much persuasion, the shift manager accompanied her to the hospital but left soon after. When the victim and her husband confronted the authorities on a later date, they completely denied the matter, which forced the victim to seek help from the law.
