Convention held against National Pension System (NPS) at Guwahati's District Library

GUWAHATI: A convention against the NPS (National Pension System) and restoration of the OPS (Old Pension Scheme) was organized on Saturday at the District Library, Guwahati. The Joint Council of Trade Unions, Assam, the Confederation of Central Government Employees, Assam and the All India State Government Employees Federation jointly organized the convention.

The All India State Government Employees Federation President Subhash Lamba inaugurated the convention. Several trade union leaders, including NF Railway Mazdoor union General Secretary Asish Biswas, All Assam Government NPS Association President Achyutanada Hazarika, State Bank of India officers' association president TAP Paul, former joint convenor of JCTU Satanjib Das, and leaders of the constituent unions, addressed the convention. The convention was built to resolve a united movement against the NPS.

The joint convenor, JCTU Garga Talukdar, explained the objective of the convention, while Bhabendra Kumar Kalita placed the draft resolution. A presidium consisting of Dinesh Sarma, Dwijendra Kumar Debnath, and Ambika Baishya conducted the convention.

Achyutananda Hazarika, President of the All Assam Govt. NPS Employees Association, expressed, "Teachers, employees, and workers are the builders, pillars, and backbone of the country, state, civilization, and social system. The responsibility for the future of society lies on our shoulders. We are insecure, which means society is insecure. Political parties must ensure our security. We must force them to restore the old pension system by recalling the fear of NPS. This is the call of the teachers, employees, working class, and society."

Further, he said, "In the past, there have been strong calls by the teachers and employees for the restoration of the OPS, and several states have reintroduced the OPS to protect their employees. In 2023, we must force other state and central governments to make their decisions in favor of teachers, employees, and workers. We will oblige. Therefore, we will ensure that every teacher, worker, employee, and their family vote in the elections. We have called a huge meeting on April 9 at Pub Banshar College premises. From this conference until December 2023, we will go to all the districts of Assam and hold at least 100 meetings. Through these meetings, we will meet every teacher, employee, and worker to conduct awareness programs about the upcoming elections. We are sure that the government of Assam will take a decision in favor of the employees before December 2023."
