GUWAHATI: The Indigenous Tribal Sahitya Sabha, Assam (ITSSA) submitted a memorandum to the Governor of Assam to make the knowledge of official languages, local languages of Assam mandatory for the candidates seeking recruitment in Cotton University (CU), Guwahati.

The memorandum read thus: “ITSSA, a conglomerate of the eight indigenous tribal Sahitya Sabhas of Assam, comprising the Tiwa Sahitya Sabha, Dimasa Sahitya Sabha, Karbi Lamet Amei, Mising Sahitya Sabha, Deori Sahitya Sabha, Rabha Sahitya Sabha, Garo Sahitya Sabha and the Bodo Sahitya Sabha would like to take the proud privilege to draw Your Excellency’s kind attention to the following few lines for favour of kind consideration and immediate necessary action. “That, Cotton University, Guwahati was instituted in 2017 with the sole objectives of facilitating for the people of Assam to achieve a world class educational standard and to preserve and propagate the languages, cultures, traditions and civilizations of the varied and ethnic nationalities of the State of Assam. This University is now running in a very disciplined and smooth manner and it may be expected that it will be able to achieve its cherished aims and objectives it is instituted for.

“Reliable sources indicate that at present, an appointment process is underway to recruit a host of Assistant Professors, Associate Professors and Professors in the University for its various departments. It is also understood that a huge member of candidates have applied for the recruitment from outside the state of Assam and these candidates would be flocking together at the time of Interview. These candidates having no minimum knowledge of the State’s official or local languages, if appointed, how will they impart education in an eco-friendly manner? Will it not jeopardize the very social fabric of the state of Assam? For the purpose, a paper of 50 marks written or viva voce in the languages in question should be made compulsory for all the candidates irrespective of where they hail from. “It is, therefore, our genuine demand that knowledge of official languages of Assam that is Assamese and Bodo in case of Brahmaputra valley and Bengali in case of Barak Valley and/or indigenous tribal languages predominant in certain areas, should be made mandatory for all the candidates appearing in the Interview for recruitment of Assistant Professors, Associate Professors and Professors being held very shortly in Cotton University, Guwahati and thereby to save and protect the multi-facet interests of the varied and ethnic nationalities of the state of Assam.”
