Cotton University to host 44th Institute of Indian Geographers annual meet and international conference

GUWAHATI: The Department of Geography of Cotton University (CU) is to organize the 44th Annual Meet and International Conference of the Institute of Indian Geographers (IIG) on January 22–24.

The conference aims to address the multifaceted issues of poverty, inequality, and discrimination, alongside emerging challenges like climate change, environmental degradation, and shifting global power dynamics at local, regional, and global scales under the broad conference theme ‘Shaping Tomorrow: Society, Culture, and Environment in an Interconnected World’.

More than three hundred and fifty participants from across the country will take part in the conference and present 376 research papers in various technical sessions covering fifteen subthemes. Apart from the technical sessions, the conference will feature workshops, four plenary lectures, five thematic lectures, ten invited short speeches, a penal discussion, a presentation for the Young Geographers Award, and two memorial lectures.

In honour of eminent academician and geographer Prof. Aizajuddin Ahmed, the IIG has initiated the Prof. Aizajuddin Ahmed Memorial Lecture in this edition of the meeting, which will be delivered by Prof. Atiya Habeeb Kidwai, a former professor at the Centre for the Study of Regional Development at Jawaharlal Nehru University.

Other highlights of the event include the Prof. A B Mukerji Memorial Lecture, which honours the distinguished Indian geographer Prof. A B Mukerji and will be delivered by Prof. Ram Babu Bhagat, who was previously affiliated with the International Institute of Population Studies. Several prominent geographers and other dignitaries from India and abroad will attend the event, stated a press release.
