Guwahati: Demanding the regularization of their jobs All Assam COVID-19 Safai Karmi (cleaning staff) staged a protest on Friday (December 18) at Dighalipukhuri area of Guwahati.

The cleaning workers staged the protest holding photos of Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma demanding the fulfillment of the promise made by state Health Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma during the time of appointing them.

Minister Sarma during the COVID pandemic promised a lot, but despite that after the closure of covid centers after November 20 all the cleaning workers were released from their jobs.

It is to be noted that over six thousand employees were appointed as cleaning staff during that time.

Whereas cleaning workers from many districts such as Majuli, Kokrajhar, Dhubri did not receive their payment in October and November.

The protesters alleged that Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma promised a lot of things but has not delivered in any of those. The protesters said that the minister has not lived up to any of his promises and threatened that they will intensify their stir and if need be they will not shy away from taking up weapons.

They further stated that they would hold more violent protests against it if their issues are not resolved before the 2021 Assembly election.

Earlier on July 23, the temporary cleaning employees of Sarusajai held a protest over the non-payment of their wages.

On the other hand, Laboratory Technicians are also has been continuously protesting in Guwahati against the same issue as they were reportedly fired from their jobs with just remuneration and experience or appreciation certificate in October this year despite the government promising that their jobs will be made permanent after three months.
