GUWAHATI: The COVID situation in Kamrup (Metro) is improving and covid positive cases and covid deaths are declining significantly. In May, as many as 32,784 COVID positive cases were detected along with 533 deaths. The highest positive cases were detected on May 3 with 1,645 cases. From May 21, the number of positive cases per day has been declining steadily and on May 31, as many as 384 positive cases were detected.

During the month, the highest number of deaths was recorded on May 11 with 35 persons losing the battle against the dreaded virus. Among other days that registered higher numbers of deaths were — May 10 (30), May 25 (27), 26 each on May 12, May 19, and May 17.

The lowest number of deaths was recorded on May 30 with seven. On May 31, a total of 10 people lost breathed their last due to the virus. Till May 31, there were a total of 4,823 active cases in Kamrup Metro. Out of the total active cases, while 3,127 were under home isolation, as many as 1,696 persons were admitted to COVID Care Centres and hospitals. According to an NHM (National Health Mission), Kamrup Metro official, there are five COVID Care Centres in the district.

The COVID Care Centres in kamrup are —

  1. Sarusajai COVID Care Centre - 430 beds
  2. SIRD COVID Care Centre - 274 beds
  3. Royal Global University - 900 beds
  4. Rituraj Hotel - 80 beds
  5. Indian Institute of Hotel Management - 421 beds

The COVID hospitals are Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital, Kahilipara COVID Hospital, and Government Ayurvedic College & Hospital. It is to be mentioned that while the situation in most of the areas under the district is improving, the situation in the rural areas of Sonapur remains grim.

Due to the high infection rate in Sonapur, the Kamrup Metro Deputy Commissioner has issued an order that every person from the 150 villages of the area will have to be tested.

Already, the district administration has marked the Uloni Baganbasti area under Sonapur Revenue Circle as a containment zone. Moreover, no COVID positive person in Sonapur will be allowed to stay under home isolation. The District Administration has also put three additional ambulances for the area.
