GUWAHATI: Condemning the recent eviction drives carried out by the State government, the CPI (Communist Party of India), Assam State Council has alleged that it is a Contempt of Court by the government as it didn't follow the Gauhati High Court's order to halt eviction drives amid the pandemic situation. The CPI has demanded the government to rehabilitate and compensate the evicted families at the earliest.

In a statement, CPI member-secretary Chakreswar Kalita said, "On June 6, as many as 74 families were evicted from a rubber garden in the Kakitila forest area at Taralangso under Lanka Revenue Circle of Hojai district. Their fields were also destroyed. On May 21, as many as 40 families were evicted from the Karaibari Forest Village of Chirang district. The houses of the villagers were burnt during the drive. On May 27, a total of 20 houses were demolished at Runikhata forest of Udalguri. The following day, an eviction drive was conducted at Laongai Forest Area in Karimaganj. Again, on June 1, a total of 16 houses were demolished in Laongai Forest Area."

The CPI also demanded the government to rehabilitate the families who have been affected by flood erosion.
