GUWAHATI: Crime against women is on the rise in Assam. This has been revealed by the data of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).

In 2020, Assam had recorded 1,736 rapes cases. This figure went up to 3,747 in 2021. Similarly, the number of trafficking cases registered in 2020 was 53, which increased to 218 in the consecutive year. The number of dowry deaths in 2020 was 124, which increased to 135 in 2021. In 2020, 11,389 cases of cruelty against women by their husbands were registered in the State. In 2021, this figure went up to 14,452. While 4,792 cases of kidnapping of women/girls were registered in 2020, in 2021, 7,691 such cases were recorded.

Assam recorded the highest rate of crime against women in the country for the fourth consecutive year as per NCRB data for 2020. Crime in India 2020 report shows that the rate of crime against women in Assam was 154.3, way higher than the national rate of 56.5. Odisha came second with 112.9 and Delhi came third with 106.4. The rate is calculated as the number of crimes recorded per 100,000 population. In 2017, the rate of crime against women in Assam was 143.3, it was 166 for 2018 and in 2019 the figure was 177.
