Cyclone Amphan develops depression; rains to continue in Assam: RMC

GUWAHATI: The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) at Borjhar has said rain with mild wind may continue in Guwahati and adjoining areas on Saturday due to Amphan impact as the super cyclonic storm has weakened into a deep depression. The meteorological centre had earlier warned that Amphan would cause rain/thundershower with lightning and gusty wind with a speed of 30 to 40 km per hour at isolated places over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura on Friday.

The RMC had also warned that heavy to very heavy rain was very likely to occur at isolated places over Arunachal Pradesh. Heavy to very heavy rain with extremely heavy rain was very likely to occur at a few places over west Assam & west Meghalaya. "Guwahati and many other parts of Assam and North East received rainfall on Thursday and Friday. It will continue on Saturday. Fortunately the super cyclonic storm did not result in gusty wind and damages," a source in RMC said.

Rain is expected in Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh and the wind can cause damage to trees. No strong winds are expected on May 22, said the source. The cyclone lays centered over Bangladesh as of now but there is no threat in Bangladesh.

The cyclone weakened from a super cyclonic storm to a cyclonic storm on Thursday morning and it crossed India-Bangladesh border at 11.30 PM on May 20. The RMC has predicted Guwahati will have maximum and minimum temperatures are most likely to be 31°C & 21°C respectively on Saturday.
