DC appeal masses to adopt safe Diwali practices

GUWAHATI: Kamrup Metropolitan District Administration (DA), initiated by Deputy Commissioner (DC) Biswajeet Pegu, with Diwali nearing, has made the right noises by asking Diwali revelers in the district to limit their noises within the norms set for it.

Since October 23, 2018 there has been a directive from the Supreme Court of India, in a writ petition, regarding implementation of laws for controlling noise and air pollution from noise generated from activities such as bursting fire-crackers. The apex court directed that on Dipawali days, fireworks would strictly be from 8 pm till 10 pm only.

The district administration is going to constitute a team with its officials, besides officials from police, the GMC and the Pollution Control Board, Assam (PCBA) to check and inspect commercial stockiest of fire-crackers to stop the use of such crackers at source.

The district administration has also appealed to the citizens to celebrate Diwali in eco-and-environment-friendly ways.

The district administration has appealed to the people of the district to celebrate Diwali in a traditional manner with earthen lamps, diyas etc., and avoiding the use of electrical bulbs, using eco-friendly local crackers, not to burst crackers near hospitals, control sound pollution, check concentration of chemical etc., in the air, dispose waste material in a segregated manner, assist the GMC in disposing waste materials and avoid the use of plastic and polythene.

The District Commissioner (DC) Kamrup (M), Biswajeet Pegu informed that the five task force teams will ensure that crackers are not sold outside of the above mentioned locations. Also, they will patrol the streets during the festivities and monitor that no loud crackers are burst near hospitals and that people maintain the crackers ban from 8 pm to 10 pm. If any person is found disregarding the rules, proper action will be taken against them.
