Demand for ST status is not new: All Adivasi Students’ Association of Assam

GUWAHATI: The All Adivasi Students’ Association of Assam (AASAA) has reiterated their demand for granting ST (Scheduled Tribe) status to the adivasis of Assam.

In a press conference, the association’s president, Pardip Nag, and general secretary, Nuwas Barla, said that Munda, Oraon, and Santhals constitute the indigenous groups of the country. The Indian Constitution regards them as being of a Scheduled Tribe; outside Assam, they are considered to be tribal, but in Assam, they are deprived of the ST status. They said, “The demand for our ST is nothing new; we are already listed in it. It is our long-pending demand that the ST be granted to the adivasis of Assam. We demand that our status be granted.”
